Digital Business Innovation Basics

What is digital transformation? Perhaps, you have already asked yourself this question. An abundance of answers is within easy reach, on the web. But have you ever asked yourself whether and to what extent digital transformation can change your organisation or its business model? Do you have an innovative product in mind, or are you planning to set up or change your company or business model digitally? Do you wonder what could/should be done? Which concepts fit your specific framework conditions? - Let's work it out together in this course.

Small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, can bring high-quality innovations to market dynamically and with pinpoint accuracy. Thanks to digital transformation, this agility can also get decisive advantages for your company in your digital business life. For this, you and your employees need comprehensive knowledge about technologies, business models, and business processes - which you can acquire in this university course!

Contents and Focus

  • You will learn the basic concepts of digital transformation technologies, possible business models, and suitable business processes.
  • You will get to know the digital value chain and understand how to identify and analyse the different possibilities for innovative business opportunities.
  • You will learn about the business processes and quality criteria necessary to move from a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to digital product innovation.
  • During the course, you will work out in small groups the possible/necessary steps to start your digital business model transformation and develop a digital product innovation.

This university course consists of several modules:

Pre-Module 0 (online): Introduction to Digital Transformation

  • Developing the Related Work literature and introductory topics
  • Preparation for the Face to Face course

Module I: Introduction to Digital Transformation

  • Welcome and introduction
  • Overview of digital transformation topics
  • Business and technological innovation
  • Examples of business opportunities
  • Opportunities and challenges of digitalization

Module II: Business Innovation

  • Innovation process
  • Methods for identifying the value proposition, market analysis
  • Methods for business and revenue modeling, environment analysis

Module III: Digitalisation Technologies

  • Cyber-physical systems (CPS)
  • Internet of Things (IoT) and Connectivity
  • Data Collection

Module IV: Quality Assurance and Dependable Development

  • Introduction Quality Assurance / Dependable Systems
  • Industrial quality processes
  • Development of secure products
  • Development of (cyber-)secure products

Case study - transfer of the acquired knowledge to an industrial example

You will take the module examinations in modules I to IV. You will then work on a final project and transfer what you have learned to an industrial example.

Admission Requirements

The prerequisites for admission to this university course are fulfilling a qualification specific to the target group, e.g., project manager, quality engineer, business economist, or comparable capabilities.

The academic course management decides on admission based on the qualifications submitted.

Target Groups

  • Technically-minded individuals with specialized training in technology development who wish to enhance personal development further in the field of digital business modelling or
  • Business-focused individuals who wish to develop their understanding and skills in the field of digital technologies or
  • People with a Bachelor's or Master's degree from non-subject-related studies having relevant professional experience and wishing to adapt their business model digitally.
