Magnetohydrodynamical modeling of the plasma in the solar corona & relations to laboratory fusion

Ever since the realization of the 1940s that the sun's upper atmosphere, the corona, exhibits a temperature about 250 times larger than that observed at the solar surface, intense research efforts were directed into theoretical and numerical models of the complex physical processes responsible for the coronal heating. Besides this fundamental astrophysical research question, due to our increasing exposure in space, further concerns have to be addressed: Eruptive phenomena taking place in the corona such as flares and coronal mass ejections pose a serious threat to space exploration, aviation as well as our technological infrastructure, from satellites to earth-based power grids. It is for this reason, that the coronal magnetic field is permanently monitored and data-driven numerical models are being developed to forecast the heliospheric plasma propagating into interplanetary space.

In this talk a novel global coronal magnetohydrodynamical model is going to be presented that will become an integral part of the European Heliospheric Forecasting Information Asset. The second part of the talk, dealing with a perturbation analysis of astrophysical jets in coronal conditions, shall address the first question of identifying sources of the coronal heating. We will encounter largely scaled up versions of laboratory fusion plasma magnetic confinement concepts and phenomena that are of equal importance on the road towards harnessing fusion energy.
