Transient liquid phase (TLPB) bonding is a joining technique developed as an alternative upon arc welding, brazing and diffusion bonding. It involves three main steps: the liquefaction of the interlayer and base metal dissolution, liquid phase isothermal solidification and solute homogenization. This technique has been applied to a wide range of materials: superalloys, steels, aluminium alloys, titanium alloys, Pb-free alloys and between dissimilar metals and ceramics. This bonding technique is widely used, from aerospace industry to Pb-free microelectronics. Thermodynamics, diffusion, reactions, precipitation, and kinetics must be addressed to describe the complex interactions in TLPB. Therefore, a deep understanding of the phenomena involved in this type of joint is required to establish the optimal parameters of its manufacture. The lecture will be held by Silvana Sommadossi, Universidad Nacional del Comahue (Argentina).
