In this university course comprising 10 units, you will acquire basic know-how on environmental and sustainability management systems, sustainability reporting and greenhouse gas balancing, backcasting and roadmapping with the goal of climate neutrality, as well as carbon management with a special focus on the decarbonisation of supply chains.

In 10 lessons, this course will provide you with basic know-how on environmental and sustainability management systems, sustainability reporting and greenhouse gas accounting, backcasting and roadmapping with the goal of climate neutrality, as well as carbon management with a special focus on the decarbonisation of supply chains.
After completing this course, you will be able to…
- name fields of action of decarbonisation and describe their challenges
- implement a modern, EMAS and ISO 14000-compliant environment and sustainability management system that is oriented towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and takes supply chain responsibility into account
- develop sustainability reporting in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and in compliance with European law
- prepare a complete, GHG Protocol-compliant greenhouse gas inventory for your company
- draw up a decarbonisation roadmap based on a bundle of measures with the goal of climate neutrality and develop a carbon management system (as part of sustainability management) which enables continuous monitoring of target achievement and any necessary tightening of measures

Teaching and learning methods
This course takes place in 3 phases:
Online phase: In the online phase, you will acquire fundamental knowledge through a process of self-study. This is done by referencing a combination of articles, literature on the topic, learning videos and taking advantage of other small learning offers. You can independently choose when and where you study. In order to ask questions and exchange information with lecturers and other course participants, you can freely access the TU Graz learning platform "TeachCenter".
Before the online phase begins, a synchronous online session (e.g. by using Webex) will be held with the lecturer to provide an easy introduction to the module content. Every week, a synchronous online session with the lecturer is held, which enables you to reflect on the content and to ask any questions you may still have through a direct exchange.
Attendance phase: Based on what you learned in the online phase, you will deepen your knowledge in course units and receive personal support from experts on site. You have the opportunity to discuss, reflect upon, further expand, and apply the knowledge you have learned in the context of case study examples. Students who cannot be on site for professional reasons can participate in the courses via the online conference system (e.g. by using Webex).
Transfer phase: This phase takes place individually or in a team. Here, you will use the knowledge you have acquired to work on questions and problems from your company context. In this phase, you also receive support from experts.
Target Group
The university course addresses company staff whose goal is to analyse, explain, initiate or manage operational decarbonisation projects and aspire to gain competence in sustainability management as specialists and managers.
The course is particularly suitable for specialists (e.g. project managers, quality engineers, business economists) from the following sectors:
- industry, R&D
- consulting services
- trade and logistics
- energy industry
Admission Requirements
The prerequisite for admission to this university course is the fulfilment of a target group-specific qualification, e.g. project manager, quality engineer, business economist and comparable qualifications.
The course is especially suitable for specialists (e.g. project managers, quality engineers, business economists) from the following industries

- Consulting services
- Trade and logistics
- Energy industry
The decision on admission is made by the academic course management on the basis of the qualifications described in the application process.
This course is part of the EMBA Green and Digital Transition. If the course is completed, credit may be awarded in the EMBA Green and Digital Transition. In order to receive credit, the exams within the course must be passed.
