Social Security Law

The university course in Social Security Law offers individuals with a degree in mathematics (specialisation insurance and financial mathematics) complementary training for a career in the insurance industry.

Participants receive professional training in Austrian social security law and learn the fundamentals of the legal framework for health, accident and pension insurance.

The content of the course follows the training requirements of the Austrian Actuarial Society (Aktuarvereinigung Österreichs AVÖ) in effect at the time of the course, so that successful completion of the course fulfils the respective subject-specific requirements for training as a recognised actuary.

Content

  • Tasks, structure and financing of social security insurance in Austria
  • Benefit claims in health/accident insurance as well as the public pension scheme
  • Structure of the public pension scheme, calculating pensions, purpose and functionality of the associated pension account

 

Successful graduates of this university course fulfil part of the legal requirements for becoming an actuary.

 

Forms of teaching and learning

  • In-person stage: Introduction and explanation of the fundamental aspects of social security law (regulations for different forms of insurers and types of insurance, solvency, supervision) and international standards
  • Additional synchronous online stage: Online discussions of individual questions with the lecturer in plenary sessions.
  • Content application: The learned content is explored in greater depth by applying the acquired knowledge to concrete practical problems.

The university course is aimed at

  • Graduates with a degree in mathematics who wish to complete actuary training
  • Employees of insurance, consulting and auditing companies or financial market supervisory authorities
  • Professionals with an interest in the legal framework of the Austrian social security sector
