International Accounting for Insurance Companies

The university course International Accounting for Insurance Companies is primarily aimed at graduates with a degree in mathematics who wish to obtain an additional, complementary qualification as an actuary (in accordance with AVÖ requirements) and aspire to a management (actuarial) position in the insurance and finance industries.

The content of the university course follows the training requirements of the Austrian Actuarial Society (Aktuarvereinigung Österreichs AVÖ) in effect at the time, so that successful completion of the university course fulfils the respective subject-specific requirements for training as a recognised actuary.

Contents

The university course includes the following three topic blocks:

  1. Introduction: Review of the basic concepts in accounting, structure of a balance sheet, profit and loss statements, differences between balance sheets according to the Austrian Commercial Code (UGB) and Solvency II
  2. IFRS 9: Regulations regarding the valuation of financial instruments and related gains and losses
  3. IFRS 17: Principles for the valuation and presentation of insurance contracts (overview, basic model, premiums and presentation of profits).

Successful graduates of this university course fulfil part of the economic requirements for becoming an actuary (in accordance with AVÖ requirements).

Target group and admission requirements

The university course is primarily aimed at graduates with a degree in mathematics who are currently working or are intending to work for insurance companies, consulting or auditing firms, or financial market supervisory authorities.

The course also provides the opportunity for continuing education and consolidation for already recognised actuaries and those working in relevant fields, such as accounting.

The prerequisite for admission to this university course is training equivalent to that of people in the target group (see Target group) or relevant professional experience in finance or insurance.

The decision on admission to the university course is made by the academic manager responsible on the basis of the qualifications submitted.

Forms of teaching and learning

In-person stage:

  • Lectures;
  • Reflection and discussion;
  • Application and consolidation of what has been learned through working on case studies, practical questions and problems;

Individual at-home learning: self-study and exam preparation; If needed, supplementary online stage.
