Orange the World: Violence Against Women Can Be Stopped
Violence against women continues to be one of the most widespread human rights violations. The UN campaign “Orange the World” takes place annually between 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and 10 December, Human Rights Day. During these 16 days, buildings around the world are lit up in orange to send a visible signal against violence against women. A stark call to look and act.
Further information on the campaign, a toolkit and numerous tips for personal engagement against violence against women can be found at www.orangetheworld.at.
In 2025, the campaign’s motto is “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against Women and Girls”. People of all genders are called upon to stop violence against women. Because gender-specific violence is not a “women’s problem”, but concerns us all. Men must stand up as allies and speak out against violence against women and girls.
STOP violence against women
One in three women is affected by violence worldwide. One woman in five in Austria still experiences physical and/or sexual violence from the age of 16. More than one in four women has experienced some form of sexual harassment at work, and more than one in five has been affected by stalking. On average, three women are murdered in Austria every month. The ‘Orange The World’ campaign calls on people of all genders to say STOP to violence against women.
Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) is also joining the Orange the World campaign in Austria in 2025. As a visible sign against violence against women, university buildings are flanked by orange flags.
Graz universities against violence against women
As part of the international campaign “Orange the World – 16 Days against Violence against Women”, the University of Graz, TU Graz, Med Uni Graz and the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz are reaffirming in 2025 their ongoing commitment to and position of zero tolerance towards sexualised violence, sexual harassment and abuse of power.
Here is an excerpt from the joint declaration of the universities in Graz against gender-based violence and abuse of power: As universities, we are firmly committed to gender equality and to creating positive and career-enhancing conditions for women. We do not tolerate sexual or gender-based violence, sexist behaviour, harassment or discrimination. We also take appropriate preventive measures and offer support to those affected. We see it as our task to provide a safe, respectful and appreciative study and work environment for all members of our communities. We look, we act – and we stand by the side of those affected.
