Proof of German Language Competence

German language proficiency at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages is an admission requirement for a degree programme taught in German at TU Graz.

If your proficiency in German has not yet reached the required level C1, then you can register at TU Graz as a non-degree student with German language competence at level A2 until you are able to document German language competence at the required level C1.

Certificates

When you submit your Application for Admission to study at TU Graz, you must include one of the following certificates.

Certificates

You can demonstrate your German language competence at the required level C1 by providing:

  1. Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) (Austrian Language Certificate for German) or
  2. Goethe Certificate or
  3. Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF)
    All four exam subjects reading, listening, writing and speaking must be completed at TDN 4 level.
    or
  4. telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule or
  5. Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) or
  6. Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) or
  7. Deutsche Sprachprüfung der Kulturministerkonferenz (DSD) or
  8. Certificate of an University Preparation Programme (Vorstudienlehrgang) at an Austrian University or
  9. Completion of 8 school years at a German-speaking school or
  10. 4 years of German lessons at a secondary school level II (Sekundarstufe II) and a secondary school leaving examination in the subject German (Reifeprüfung im Fach Deutsch) or
  11. Secondary school leaving examination (Reifeprüfung) in German language or
  12. a successfully completed degree programme taught in German.

The language certificates 1 to 7 cannot have been issued more than two years prior to the time of application. You have to present the original documents.

Admission Without German Language Proficiency at level C1

If your proficiency in German has not yet reached the required level C1, then you can register at TU Graz as a non-degree student until you are able to document German language competence at the required level C1. You are required to proof German language proficiency at level A2 or higher at the time when you submit your application.

Certificates

You are required to proof German language proficiency at level A2 or higher. In addition to the types of proof listed further above, we also accept the following certificates:

  1. Österreichische Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) (Austrian Language Certificate for German) or
  2. Goethe Certificate or
  3. Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kulturministerkonferenz (DSD) or
  4. Österreichischer Integrationsfonds-Test A2 (ÖIF) or
  5. Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF) or
  6. Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang DSH-1 or
  7. telc Deutsch A2 or
  8. Integrationsprüfung A2 or
  9. Deutsch Test für Österreich A2 (DTÖ) oder
  10. Certificate or course confirmation of language proficiency at level A2 of a University Preparation Programme (Vorstudienlehrgang) at an Austrian University.

The language certificates cannot have been issued more than two years prior to the time of application. You have to present the original documents.

Please be sure to submit your application together with appropriate proof of your German proficiency.

Procedure

  1. TU Graz gives you a provisional notice of admission which includes, as a condition for completing your admission, the requirement to take the Supplementary Examination in German of the University Preparation Programme Graz.
  2. with your notice of admission issued by TU Graz, you enrol personally in the general admission period at the University Preparation Programme of the Graz universities.
  3. The Registrar's Office of TU Graz receives your data online from University Preparation Programme of the Graz universities. After your admission you will be informed by e-mail about all further steps and enrolled as a non-degree student within the general admission period.
  4. You take the Supplementary Examination in German within the deadline specified in your provisional notice of admission to TU Graz.
  5. When you have passed the Supplementary Examination in German, send the corresponding certificate and a scan of the notice you received about your admission within the general admission deadline by e-mail to:
    admission.bachelornoSpam@tugraz.at (admission to the Bachelor's programme)
    admission.masternoSpam@tugraz.at (admission to the Master's programme in German).
    Afterwards, you will be enrolled in the regular degree programme (according to the notice of admission).
