Entry and Residence Requirements

Depending on your citizenship, you may require a visa to enter Austria and a residence permit if you are staying here longer.
Find out here whether you need a visa or a residence permit, which is the appropriate option for you and where you should submit your applications, etc.

What you Need to Know

  • Your residence title depends on the length and purpose of your planned stay.  You should select the title that is appropriate to the desired length and purpose of your stay.
  • EU/EEA and Swiss Nationals:
no visa required for entry (passport or personal identity card required). Please report to the national authority (Local Styrian Government, Department 3 – Residence and Security / "Land Steiermark, Abteilung 3 – Referat Aufenthalts- und Sicherheitswesen") within 3 months and apply for registration ("Anmeldebescheinigung").
Please note that you need to show proof of sufficient financial means when applying for registration.

  • Third Country Nationals (non EU/EEA or Swiss):
please enquire at the Austrian Embassy or Consulate for more information on your entry and residence requirements.

Please Note

Third Country Nationals:
  • Please apply for your entry and residence titles in good time. It may take a long time until your application is processed. Arrange for an appointment with the Austrian Representative Authority as soon as possible and ask which documents to bring along.
  • Different residence title categories entail differing requirements, e.g. means of subsistence, minimum income.
  • Please note that you will require proof of accommodation when you apply for an entry or residence title.
