Extension Programme Artificial Intelligence Engineering

Medical diagnostics and treatment, logistics and production processes, vehicle development and customer service are just a few examples of areas in which artificial intelligence (AI) is being used increasingly for the purpose of optimisation. It is revolutionising numerous industries and creating exciting new fields of work.

In the Extension Programme Artificial Intelligence Engineering (AIE) you will acquire essential skills for AI development and application, combining them with the specialist expertise of your main degree programme in order to develop innovative solutions.

Quick Facts

  • Duration of study: 2 semesters
  • ECTS credit points: 34
  • Academic degree: Final Certificate of TU Graz
  • Language of instruction: English

What is an Extension Programme?

Within the framework of an extension degree programme, you can acquire additional skills in a subject during or after completing a Master's or diploma degree programme in order to strengthen your professional profile and increase your career opportunities.

The Extension Programme

In two semesters you will acquire the basics of computer science and artificial intelligence (AI), learning to apply modern AI methods to your area of expertise.

The training comprises numerous courses from the fields of computer science and engineering. You will receive insights into data science, predictive analyses and automation solutions and develop your own AI models in interdisciplinary projects. Among other things you will train neural networks and work with current technologies such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.

You will have the opportunity to work on real-world problems from the field of industry and research and to develop solutions in teams. In the Programme, you will also reflect on ethical, legal and social challenges of working with artificial intelligence.

The NEW Extension Programme Artificial Intelligence Engineering (AIE) will be offered from winter semester 2025/26. All information subject to approval by the Senate of TU Graz.

Range of potential applications

Innovative AI methods are deployed in numerous industries to solve complex problems. Examples include:

  • Predictive analyses in medicine in order to predict the course of diseases and provide assistance for therapy decisions
  • Optimisation in production and logistics processes in order to cut costs and use resources sustainably
  • Analysis of large volumes of business data to identify market trends
  • Automation in industry, from predictive maintenance to real-time control of complex systems
  • Development of self-driving vehicles for tomorrow’s mobility
  • Intelligent assistance systems that help people in everyday life, work or care
  • Chatbots in customer service for automated, interactive handling of inquiries

Focus Areas

You will complete two compulsory modules and study the following topics in depth:

  • Programming (Python)
  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Machine learning and pattern recognition
  • Neural networks and deep learning
  • Reinforcement learning
  • Ethical, legal and social aspects of AI
  • Practical application (seminar project)
