Major Computational Neuroscience

Brain research at a technical university? Of course! Doing brain research, in addition to biological, medical or chemical knowledge, many different methods are required which are developed by engineers. The Computational Neuroscience major is designed for students who want to become familiar with artificial neural networks and machine learning methods while also being interested in the generation, measurement, and analysis of biological brain signals.

Quick Facts

You can choose the major Computational Neuroscience as part of the following Master's degree program:

The major includes 50 to 60 ECTS credits.

Content of the Major

The major offers a mix of theory and practical courses such as exercises and labs. While concepts of Cognitive Neuroscience, Functional Brain Research, but also Biosignal Processing, Machine Learning are taught in many facets in a very broad range of lectures, it comes to practical implementation in the exercises and labs. Besides the measurement of brain signals, there is also a focus on experimental design, as well as how to analyze the measured data. For example, students are comprehensively introduced to the field of BCIs, where they learn to develop such systems independently. In a project, students learn to combine the acquired knowledge and to implement a first research question.

Understanding the brain has been a goal of science for centuries, and the knowledge gained has influenced many areas of life. In addition to exploring human nature, principles for developing new methods, such as neural networks, are derived. This Major explores different aspects of neuroscience to provide a solid foundation for a career in research or to apply the knowledge gained in industry and development departments.

Research areas

The Institute of Neural Engineering operates various laboratories for analysing brain activity. This includes electroencephalography, near-infrared spectroscopy and access to the magnetic resonance imaging laboratory for MR and functional imaging. Conventional biosignals can be measured in all settings. The institute is integrated into the local research environment and maintains many international co-operations.
