Bachelor's degree programme Mathematics

Do you enjoy solving mathematical problems, analysing complex connections and working with computers? In the bachelor's programme Mathematics at TU Graz, you apply your skills in many different mathematical disciplines as well as focussing on deepening your knowledge of your chosen subjects. 


You receive a sound, basic education in mathematical areas that are particularly important for work in industry, commerce and science.

  • Soft skills: You practice presenting results, both orally and in writing, and work in teams. You learn to communicate with other natural science and technical disciplines 

You learn the fundamentals of the following core areas of mathematics:

  • Differential calculus and integral calculus with one and several variables
  • Linear algebra and analytic geometry
  • Algebraic structures, discrete mathematics
  • Numerical methods and optimisation
  • Probability theory and statistics
  • Differential equations
  • Complex analysis
  • Functional analysis

Specialisation Subjects

You choose one of the following specialisations:

Applied mathematics: Advanced mathematical modelling, advanced stochastics, advanced numerical mathematics, advanced differential equations, and their applications.

Discrete mathematics and algorithm theory: Advanced algebra, advanced discrete mathematics, advanced optimisation, advanced theoretical computer science, and their applications.

Financial and actuarial mathematics: Advanced stochastics, advanced differential equations, and their implementation in fundamental financial and actuarial mathematical models.

Mathematical engineering: Advanced differential equations, advanced numerical mathematics, basic knowledge of mechanics and electrical engineering.

Mathematics is a subject for conscientious, stubborn, ambitious, logical thinkers and philosophers… for inventors, enthusiasts and creative souls. I recommend my study area to students for whom superficial statements or vague assumptions are too little and who enjoy an intellectual challenge.

The most enjoyable are the numerous exercises in my study programme. Above all, I like the fact that it’s often not enough to simply apply a known solution scheme. I need my own ideas in order to find a solution. I recommend the Bachelor’s Programme in Mathematics to all students who enjoy solving logical problems and might like to know that – beyond the mathematics that we were taught in school –significantly is hidden than one would expect.

I was most often inspired in my studies by the realization that, while the goal was to find structures and regularities, I needed to use creativity and unconventional ideas along the way. I see the close relationship between the lectures and exercises to be an advantage, so that one learns the theory and, at the same time, reaches for the pen and paper. I recommend the programme to all those who have an abstract way of thinking and enjoy solving logical problem.

Career Options

Graduates of the bachelor's programme Mathematics are highly qualified for master’s programmes. In Graz, you can study for example mathematics or computer science. The bachelor’s degree is internationally recognised and qualifies you to study outside of Austria as well as within.

After graduating from the master's programme, mathematicians work in industry, commerce and science.

  • They apply mathematical methods in industry, technology and the natural sciences.
  • They use deterministic and stochastic models in commerce, administration, finance and insurance.
  • They tackle questions of data security and communication technology in theory and practice.
  • They develop methods without which many devices and technologies of modern day life wouldn’t exist - for example, imaging processes in medicine and technology, communication and security in data transfer, risk management for banks and insurance companies, and computer-aided processes in natural sciences and technology.
