Project proposal for a Bachelor Project, Master Project, or a Master’s Thesis

Detection and prediction of cancer using artificial neural networks and mobile technology

Objective

This project’s aim is to automate the processes of detecting and predicting cancer and to make the access to cancer diagnostics available to anyone by using mobile technology. The project application will provide the following functionality:

  • cancer detection based on the data provided by user;
  • cancer prediction using the information retrieved from the cancer detection; and
  • others.

Abstract

This project intends to apply artificial neural network (ANN) and mobile technologies for improving cancer diagnostics. The usage of mobile technology enables users to get an early warning of suspicious lesions using their mobile phones and hence creating a patient-centric health management.

The application is planned to consist of the following components:

  1. Input-output module.

The data is uploaded from a user’s phone. Proper data are essential for detecting cancer accurately. The classification and prediction results are shown to the user, including visualization.

  1. Classification module.

Data are classified by pre-trained ANN. Classification is used for detecting the cancer lesions. Cancer classification has been carried out by many researchers, but there is still a need to improve classification accuracy.

  1. Prediction module.

Possible scenarios of the disease progression. Predictions are also done with another pre-trained ANN. Cancer prognosis is to estimate the fate of cancer, probabilities of cancer recurrence and progression, and to suggest further steps to the patients, e.g., advising to consult a medical doctor for further diagnosis.

The project is likely to use additional machine learning methods besides ANN to improve the accuracy of the results.

Students are encouraged to propose ideas for the system functionality, methods, and algorithms for implementation.

This is a cooperative project with Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University.
