The university programme has been designed specifically to connect business knowledge with computer science knowledge and enable you to gain a comprehensive overview of the ongoing changes in digitalisation. In this programme, space and support is provided that enables you develop professional, methodological, social and personal competences. In addition, you will benefit from gaining access to networking and to a mix of different industries and sectors that reflect the broad and dynamic subject area of digital transformation.

Content and Key Areas

The interdisciplinary university programme offers various educational tracks: It provides a basic management education for specialists and managers with a technical or scientific background (degree option: MBA in the master's programme) or provides graduates in the business economics, law and social sciences fields with a basic education in computer science as part of the programme's basic modules (degree option: MEng in the master's programme).

One central aspect of the educational tracks is the joint core study programme Digital Transformation. Key areas (core modules) include the topics of digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), big data and digital business models. 

It is possible for you to further individualise, specialise and tailor your degree programme by choosing compulsory elective modules in highly relevant application fields (e.g. Smart Factory, Mobility and Transportation Systems, Smart Services) as well as by carrying out transfer projects and a master's thesis (when you have completed the entire programme and accrued 90 ECTS).

Target Groups

The university programme has been developed for technicians, natural scientists and graduates in the fields of the social sciences, economics and/or law who have completed their primary academic education and would like to acquire complementary skills in the broad subject area of carrying out digital transformation projects or digital transformation processes as well as graduates with a proximity to the disciplines of technology or business, for example from the fields of business psychology, media or communication sciences. 

Other core target groups include graduates of a secondary technical educational institution who have practical experience in their field, as well as graduates of a commercial academy who currently fill management positions and who would like to broaden their education in digital transformation and fully exploit the digital potential of their businesses in the future, for example, by using AI (artificial intelligence) as a key resource in the business model.

Admission Requirements

As a prerequisite for admission to the University programme Leadership in Digital Transformation, applicants must provide proof of one of the following qualifications:

  • completion of an internationally recognised master's degree at a university or university of applied sciences in the field of technology, natural sciences, or the social sciences, business economics, or law;
  • completion of an equivalent degree from a domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution in the field of technology, natural sciences and/or the social sciences, business economics, or law;
  • completion of a bachelor's degree in the field of technology, natural sciences and/or the social sciences, business economics, or law at a domestic or foreign university or university of applied sciences and at least three years of professional experience; or
  • degree from a general or vocational secondary school or a comparable domestic or foreign school, a school leaving examination certificate or university entrance qualification exam and at least ten years of relevant professional experience in a managerial position.

Teaching and learning methods

The in-service university programme has a modular structure, and teaching is carried out in the form of blended learning (combination of distance learning and presence teaching sessions).

The modular form of the blocked courses helps meet the needs of working students, with extra support provided by the upstream distance learning elements. As a rule, only one presence block per month is required during the semester, from Thursday 1 p.m. to Saturday 4 p.m. A virtual teaching and learning environment (TeachCenter) also offers students the opportunity to network with lecturers and fellow students outside the presence sessions. A transfer phase following the presence phase concludes the content of the respective module.

Educational tracks and modules

Modular structure of the curriculum

The master's degree programme is divided into management-related basic modules, the Fundamentals in Management, and computer science-related basic modules, the Fundamentals in Computer Science.

After the two target groups have completed the basic modules, accrued 20 ECTS and acquired the respective complementary skills, participants will pursue the targeted joint development and expansion of knowledge in the core modules of the master's programme in the field of digital transformation. The students can further individualise, specialise and tailor their programme by choosing compulsory elective modules in highly relevant application fields, such as Smart Factory, Digitalisation in Mobility, or Smart Services; management-related compulsory elective subjects; transfer tasks as an integral part of the core modules; or even a relevant transfer project. Naturally, students can choose the focus of the master's thesis (MBA or MEng).

In total, up to 45% of the curriculum can be tailored to meet the student’s needs.


4 educational tracks to the master's degree

Graduates of this university degree programme are awarded the academic degree of Master of Business Administration in Leadership in Digital Transformation or Master of Engineering in Leadership in Digital Transformation.

Depending on the choice of modules, there are four educational tracks, three of which lead to an MBA and one to a Master of Engineering. To receive the academic degree of MEng, you must choose at least half of all modules in the technical field and have a technical first degree (Bachelor or HTL) as well as 3 years of professional experience. On the one hand, this requires students to select basic modules in the field of computer science as well as carry out a technically oriented master's thesis or a master's thesis associated with a technical module.
