The exhibition Réappropriations, organized by the Cultural Institute of Architecture Wallonia-Brussels (ICA) at TU Graz, invites audiences to discover spatial strategies that mend the damaged world we live in. These projects, at both the architectural and territorial scales, propose densifying the existing built fabric rather than consuming undeveloped land, regenerating existing buildings rather than demolishing and rebuilding, and, finally, incorporating the reuse of construction materials. Models, photographs, films, drawings, collages and interviews establish a dialogue between realised architectural projects, spatial studies conducted by experts, and participatory work with citizens.
Six architectural projects located in Wallonia and Brussels are presented. They are drawn from the publication Architectures Wallonie-Bruxelles Inventories #4 2020–2023 and originate from the architectural practices AgwA, Artau Architectures, Label architecture, Notan Office, Olivier Fourneau architectes, Ouest Architecture and Rotor. This publication, coordinated by the ICA and published by the Architecture Unit of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, is committed to highlighting spatial approaches – encompassing both projects and actions – capable of activating the spatial, environmental and societal transition that is required. A manifesto, thematic and descriptive texts, as well as embroidered libelles, form the body of the publication, illustrating the diversity of spatial practices that, between 2020 and 2023, have engaged in the holistic transformation of our built and unbuilt environment in Wallonia, in Brussels and, in some cases, internationally.
