TU Graz Racing Team: 2nd place in Michigan

At this year’s Formula Student competition held in the US State of Michigan, the TU Graz Racing Team achieved a sensational 2nd place in the overall class – and climbs up to 3rd place in the wold ranking.

The racing car is not to be mistaken with the competitor from Down Under: Tankia stands for "There are no kangaroos in Austria".
It was only in April that the TU Graz Racing Team had presented to the public its racing car for the 2016 season, which begins in the summer. Hardly four weeks later the previous year’s model – the Tankia 2015 – put the competition in their place and achieved an overall second place in the fiercely contested Formula Student competition in Michigan before going into a well-earned retirement. The team even achieved first places in the Autocross and Endurance events.

Strong competition in Michigan

The USA win means a lot to the team and sweetens the bitter aftertaste of the year before. In 2015 the team won first place but was then relegated to third place for formal reasons. In Michigan there is traditionally a very strong starting field and this year there were some 120 student teams from four continents. This makes the overall second place especially valuable and puts the TU Graz racing team in 6th place in the Formula Student world rankings. The next races in which the team and, for the first time, the Tankia 2016 will participate are from 14 to 17 July at Silverstone, England, and from 1 to 4 August at the Red Bull Ring in Spielfeld, Styria. Then the show continues with the race in Germany  (9 to 14 August) and Spain (24 to 28 August).

TU Graz’s rapid racing stable

The TU Graz racing team has been in existence since 2003. The team designs, develops and makes a racing car with combustion engine every year in the Formula Student class or the Formula SAE design competition in its own campus workshop. Most of the 50 members of the team study at TU Graz, but some are at the University of Graz, and they bring together experience from various fields of study – from mechanical engineering and telematic engineering to business administration and environmental system sciences.
