Successful Regatta Season for the HPS TU Graz Sailing Team
Despite frosty conditions, twelve HPS sailors took on the one-and-a-half-hour challenge at the winter charity event in the Salzkammergut. As every year, generous donations were made to the Seelenpflaster association. The regatta was an atmospheric finale to a technically and athletically demanding season in which the HPS team achieved considerable success on inland and offshore waters.
With a total of six successful regattas, impressive placings and a growing number of committed students, the High Performance Sailing Team at TU Graz can look back on an extraordinarily successful 2025 season. The results achieved demonstrate the combination of technical expertise, tactical precision and teamwork – values that symbolise the engineering culture as practised at TU Graz.
The HPS TU Graz Student Team has set itself the goal of gaining new knowledge about optimal sailing boat performance in scientific projects. The team members apply their expertise in areas such as autonomous sailing, avionics, sensor technology, materials science and fluid mechanics. The team currently has 53 members. Interested persons are welcome from all fields of study. More information and contact details can be found on the Website High Performance Sailing – HPS TU Graz.
Success offshore
The highlights on the high seas: after a remarkable 6th place out of 23 boats at the Austrian offshore national championship “Croatia 300” in mid-October, the well-rehearsed team achieved 3rd place in the Salona 46 class at the Round Palagruža Cannonball, also in Croatia, at the end of the month. The crew mastered the approximately 330 nautical miles of the Round Palagruža through the Adriatic Sea with aplomb despite challenging weather conditions. The sailing yacht crossed the finishing line in third place in its class after 66 hours and 43 minutes – a strong result for the TU Graz student sailing team. A total of 480 miles were travelled taking into account the transfer of the boat to the starting point.
Off the coast and on lakes
The HPS team made impressive demonstrations at regattas off the coast and on lakes. In September, a newly formed crew gained important experience in the Styrian Sailing League at Grundlsee and took tenth place overall. A few weeks later, the team represented TU Graz in one of the most important offshore classics in the Mediterranean – the renowned Rolex Middle Sea Race, and gained valuable international offshore experience. The season ended with the S-Cup in Punat, where the team achieved 3rd place in the silver fleet and 9th place overall in challenging conditions, once again demonstrating team spirit and sailing quality.
Proud of what they have achieved and eager for what lies ahead, the High Performance Sailing Team is sailing expectantly towards the 2026 regatta season.
