The Department for Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at Graz University of Technology invites applications for the position of a
University Professor of Bioinformatics (m/f/d)
with a full-time permanent contract (§98 UG).

Job Description
We are looking for a highly qualified and scientifically proven personality who will represent the field of bioinformatics in research and teaching in an interdisciplinary manner. Applicants are expected to lead a future-oriented and interdisciplinary research program focusing on research at the interface of medicine, biology, and information sciences using modern diagnostic and analytical methods.
In teaching, the professorship will contribute to Bachelor's and PhD-level education in the Biomedical Engineering study program, and to Master's-level studies in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Information and Computer Engineering, and Software Engineering and Management, and be an engaged mentor for our students. At the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering, undergraduate courses are taught in German or English, graduate courses are taught in English. In addition, this person will actively participate in academic self-administration.
The professorship should focus on one or several of the following or related research areas:
- High-Throughput Sequencing Algorithms and Applications,
- Computational RNA Biology and Regulatory Genomics,
- Analysis and Modeling of High-Throughput Mass Spectrometry Data,
- Single-Cell and Spatial Omics Data Analysis,
- Biomedical Data Integration and Visualization,
- Computational Systems Biology and Network Medicine,
- Computational Immunology,
- Bioinformatics of Microbes and Microbiomes,
- Computational Pathology,
- Machine Learning/Deep Learning in Bioinformatic Data Analysis,
- Bioinformatics in Clinical Applications.
The professorship will be part of the Institute of Biomedical Informatics (BIOINFO), where the current research groups specialize in developing and applying bioinformatics approaches to address key problems in genomics. The institute is one of five dedicated biomedical engineering institutes within the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering.
In particular, the professorship is intended to strengthen the existing interuniversity cooperation BioTechMed Graz with the Medical University of Graz and the University of Graz and to support it with broad applied experience.
Additionally, the Cori Institute for Molecular and Computational Metabolism Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in Graz, which is currently being established, is researching metabolic processes in order to contribute to a deeper understanding of widespread diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
Collaboration with the groups of BIOINFO, within the Department, BioTechMed Graz and with the Cori Institute for Molecular and Computational Metabolism Research, is expected.
Employment Requirements
- A completed doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field.
- A relevant habilitation (venia docendi) or an equivalent qualification.
- Excellent scientific achievements in areas listed above.
- Excellent didactic and pedagogical skills.
- Experience in management and leadership of multi-person research projects.
- Excellent command of English and command of German or the willingness to acquire it.

Centre Of Vital Interest
Relocation of the future professor to the greater Graz area (main residence) is required.
Language Skills
Applicants should have a strong command of the English language, both written and spoken, to be able to effectively represent the field internationally, and they must also be willing to learn German if they do not already know the language.
