Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) is participating in the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) network, which deals with artificial intelligence in the areas of basic research, technical innovation and societal impact. In addition to TU Graz, ELLIS units in Barcelona, Potsdam and Trento are also joining the network. The ELLIS network now comprises 39 units in 14 European countries.

The ELLIS Unit Graz, located at TU Graz and headed by Wolfgang Maass, the emeritus director of the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science, is contributing with the Graz Center for Machine Learning (GraML). GraML was founded at TU Graz in 2022 and deals with six central research areas, namely: visual intelligence, optimisation of machine learning, resource efficient and brain-inspired machine learning, probabilistic methods and causal models, recommender systems and behavioural analytics as well as domain-specific machine learning and trust.

Benefiting through collective exchange

Wolfgang Maass, head of the ELLIS Unit Graz, says: “We are excited to integrate our research into the work of the ELLIS community, and to benefit from exchanges on many levels. We would like to contribute know-how from computer vision, insight into the organization of learning in neural networks of the brain, bio-inspired methods for the design of more energy-efficient hardware for AI, as well as experience in industrial applications of data-science and ML.”

ELLIS was founded in 2018 on the premise that machine learning is the driving force behind modern artificial intelligence. The goal is for Europe to become a leader in artificial intelligence through a multicentre AI research laboratory. This goal is to be achieved by means of a three-pillar strategy: ELLIS research programmes, the ELLIS PhD and post-doc programme and the network of ELLIS units across Europe.
