Exhibition "Steiermark Schau" shows results of research and teaching of the Faculty of Architecture

The Institute of Design in Consisting Structure and Architectural Heritage Protection (EnBeDe), the Institute of Architecture and Media (IAM), the Institute of Structural Design, as well as the Institute of Construction and Design Principles (KOEN) are part of this year's provincial exhibition, which explores traces of the future that can be found in the here and now, under the motto "was sein wird" (“What will be”). The exhibition will be held at the Volkskundemuseum (Museum of Folk Culture), the Kunsthaus Graz, the Museum für Geschichte (Museum of History), as well as in a mobile pavilion.

Under the title “Was wäre wenn?” ("What if?"), the Volkskundemuseum will present the results of the Integral Design Studio at the Institute of Design in Consisting Structure and Architectural Heritage Protection held in the summer semester of 2020, led by Petra Simon and Elemer Ploder. The students' designs, which were focused on the conversion of the Volkskundemuseum and the redesign of the adjacent green space, were developed in cooperation with the Federal Monuments Authority Austria and the Volkskundemuseum, and they were also highly convincing for the director of the Volkskundemuseum, Claudia Unger. The projects will be exhibited in the “Gartensaal” (Garden hall) at the Volkskundemuseum from Saturday, April 10 to Sunday, June 13, 2021.

As part of the "Steiermark Schau" (“Showing Styria”) provincial exhibition, the Institute for Structural Design will be exhibiting the innovative structural design of a weight-reduced reinforced concrete ceiling at the Kunsthaus Graz, which was based on the results of the research project "COEBRO - Additive Fabrication of Concrete Elements by Robots" and produced in the Laboratory for Structural Engineering using 3D printing. Also at the Kunsthaus Graz, a new composite material developed at the Institute of Architecture and Media (IAM) will be presented in the form of a column. "MyCera" consists of 3D-printed brick-like modules made of clay, and its hollow chambers and openings are filled with a mixture of cellulose and mycelium (the vegetative part of fungi), helping brick elements to grow together, therefore eliminating the need for cement-based binders. Also on display: A 3D-printed clay framework with a mycelium structure that provides a healthy microbial climate that benefits honeybees and could subsequently become part of human habitats. The structure is the result of the experimental architectural study "The Living Arch. A Study Model for a Novel Wellbeing Architecture for Honeybees" by Asya Ilgün, PhD student at the IAM.

The extent to which the analogue concept of architectural education can be translated into social, built and digital spaces is shown by KOEN in a video contribution to the "Architecture Broadcasting Network", which was developed in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin and the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt. The Architecture Broadcasting Network gives an insight into strategies for more opportunity-oriented teaching methods in so-called "blended learning", expanding the development and reflection of knowledge around the interface between the digital and the real world. The installations at the Kunsthaus can be visited from Saturday, April 10 to Sunday, October 31, 2021.
