ENERGIZING EUROPE
Innovations for a sustainable energy industry

Our world is undergoing a geopolitical shift, and the unipolar dominance of the USA that lasted for many decades is evolving toward a multipolar world order. This is illustrated by the following comparison of the global population, gross domestic product (GDP), and CO₂ emissions of the BRICS, G7, and other countries around the world.

Stacked bar charts show the percentage distribution of population, GDP (2024), and CO₂ emissions across BRICS, G7, and other countries (48 %, 39 %, 54 % for BRICS; 10 %, 29 %, 20 % for G7; 42 %, 32 %, 26 % for other countries).

For many decades, the European energy industry has been highly successful in ensuring a sufficient, secure, affordable, and clean energy supply for both society and the economy. However, current geopolitical developments pose enormous challenges, particularly for the EU. From an energy economics perspective, the implications of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and developments in the USA (EU-US trade agreements, US withdrawal from climate agreements) are especially relevant.
Over the past two decades, the EU has sought to position itself primarily as a pioneer in the use of renewable energies and in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, setting ambitious targets in global comparison. From an economic perspective, however, many EU member states are currently facing major challenges, with energy supply playing a particularly significant role. Questions regarding energy supply security, as well as the development of energy prices for industry, business, and society, have come to the forefront in recent years.

Science and research, business and industry, associations, as well as politics and public administration are therefore invited to contribute to the sustainable development of the European energy industry and society. These contributions will be presented and thoroughly discussed at the 19th Symposium on Energy Innovation.
