Online teaching at Graz University of Technology

On 1 October 2021, a new section of the statutes on study law came into effect, which regulates online teaching and online examinations at Graz University of Technology.

The most important regulations summarised:

Online teaching

  • In online teaching, a distinction is made between synchronous teaching (teaching with the possibility of simultaneous interaction, e.g. video conferencing) and asynchronous teaching (teaching with the possibility of time-delayed interaction).
  • Lecturers can deliver any of the specified contact hours via synchronous virtual teaching.
  • Teaching via asynchronous virtual teaching must be authorised by the responsible dean of studies.

Oral online examinations

  • Oral exams and committee exams can be held using video conferencing software provided by Graz University of Technology.
  • The student's identity is verified via student ID or official photo ID.
  • In case of any suspicion, it is permitted to ask the student to show their immediate surroundings on camera.
  • Recordings of oral online examinations are not permitted.

Written online examinations

  • Written exams can be held using software provided by Graz University of Technology.
  • In order to confirm that a student has handed in their own work, plausibility checks are permitted within three working days after the examination.
  • A student's identity is verified via account data or student ID or official photo ID.
  • It is permitted to ask students to show their immediate surroundings before the examination and, if a suspicion arises, also during the examination.
  • Proctoring can be carried out with one or two cameras via video conferencing software so that the face and work area are visible. Supervision may be recorded, but must be deleted after three working days at the latest.
