José Portela Gonzále, Associate Professor at Universidad Pontificia Comillas, will give a lecture on "Machine Learning for Energy Application".

José Portela studied in the Universidad Pontificia Comillas where he obtained the Industrial Engineering degree (major in Electronics). In 2011 he joined the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT) as a research member, obtaining his PhD degree in 2017. Currently, he is a lecturer in Machine Learning at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (ICADE) and the School of Engineering (ICAI) in Universidad Pontificia Comillas. He also works on research projects within the IIT.

His areas of interest include time series forecasting models, Functional Data Analysis and Neural Networks and he has published several papers in international journals and conference proceedings on these topics.

In May/June 2023, Mr. José Portela will be a guest at the IEE and will give the lecture "Selected Topics of Electricity Economics and Energy Innovation (Machine Learning for Energy Application)" during his time at the institute. This course aims to introduce students to the use of data analysis techniques, using the R programming environment. The course is covering the most relevant Machine Learning techniques for classification, regression and unsupervised learning problems. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding and practical experience of how to extract knowledge from an apparently unstructured set of data.
By the end of the course, students will:

  • Understand the basic principles behind Machine Learning.
  • Have practical experience with the most relevant Machine Learning algorithms.
  • Have well-formed criteria to choose the most appropriate techniques for a given application.
