In an interview with MeinBezirk Carinthia, Sonja Wogrin explains why the energy transition is achievable and highlights the importance of research, societal engagement, and a balanced energy mix.
Sonja Wogrin was recently featured as an energy expert in the cover story of the Carinthian edition of MeinBezirk. In the interview, she discussed the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition and the crucial role of scientific research in shaping future energy systems.
Wogrin explains that modern electricity systems are highly complex engineering achievements that require a continuous balance between electricity generation and consumption. The increasing integration of renewable energy sources introduces new challenges, as wind, solar, and hydropower generation are inherently variable. At the same time, she emphasizes that Austria and Europe already possess many of the technological foundations needed to successfully implement the energy transition.
A key message of the interview is the importance of a diversified energy mix. According to Wogrin, no single technology can provide the solution on its own. Instead, photovoltaics, wind power, hydropower, energy storage technologies, and international interconnections must work together to create a climate-neutral and reliable energy system.
She also highlights the value of advanced energy system modelling. Prior to the Carinthian wind power referendum, the IEE developed a digital twin of the regional energy system, enabling researchers to evaluate different future scenarios. The analyses indicated that failing to invest in wind power could significantly increase future electricity costs.
Finally, Wogrin stresses that the energy transition is not solely a technical challenge. Its success depends on the interaction of technology, economics, policy, industry, and society. Austria has the opportunity to become a pioneer and demonstrate that a renewable-based energy system can work successfully. Through its research activities, the IEE contributes to this goal by providing scientifically sound insights and decision support for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and society as a whole.
