Simon Malacek joined the Aarhus University Summer School to deepen his expertise in Information Visualization – a key field for energy systems research.

In July, Simon Malacek attended the "Information Visualization" course at the Aarhus University Summer School, taught by Assoc. Prof. Hans-Jörg Schulz.

Optimization models are essential tools in energy systems research. However, they produce massive volumes of data, which can make it challenging to interpret results and extract meaningful insights. This is where information visualization plays a crucial role: it transforms complexity into clarity.

The course started with the fundamentals of designing correct, expressive, and effective visualizations, drawing on both technical design principles and the psychology of visual perception. It quickly became evident that visualization goes far beyond static plots. With interactive tools, data can be explored in greater depth, allowing hidden patterns and relationships to emerge.

In addition to the theoretical foundations, participants applied structured design methods and developed their own visualization projects in a hands-on final assignment. The course was both inspiring and practical, providing a valuable platform for exchanging ideas with participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. The vibrant and welcoming atmosphere of Aarhus further enriched this experience.
