Luca Santosuosso, postdoctoral researcher at our institute, presented his latest work at the IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2025 conference in Valletta, Malta.

His paper “Optimal Virtual Power Plant Investment Planning via Time Series Aggregation with Bounded Error”, co-authored with Prof. Sonja Wogrin, addresses a key challenge in large-scale energy system optimization: the heuristic nature of traditional time series aggregation (TSA) methods. The proposed approach introduces theoretically validated bounds on the objective function error between the aggregated model and its full-scale counterpart.

Numerical results for a virtual power plant investment planning problem show that the method achieves up to a 58% reduction in computational time while maintaining a formal performance guarantee.

This work is part of the ERC-funded project NetZero-Opt, which aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of optimization models for future energy systems.

The session Local Energy Markets & Communities was chaired by Desen Kırlı and Prof. Ing. John Licari, fostering insightful discussions and exchange on innovative research in smart grids and energy markets.
