Narrative Architecture is an architecture that emerges from narration, and that itself tells stories. It derives its formal language from the narrative progression of a tale, in which narrative and literary elements are translated into architectural language. Narrative situations, action and depth structures of a story, character constellations and setting of narration are transformed into design parameters that spatially articulate the aesthetic structure of a literary text. The category of the fictitious – a category which underlies every literary endeavor – makes it possible to deliberately transgress the limits of spatial realization, placing emphasis on the visionary aspects of design.

The exhibited architectural models are the result of a narrative structural analysis of selected short stories from world literature of the 20th century, including authors such as Jorge Luis Borges, Franz Kafka, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Pynchon.

Projects from Iris Athenstaedt, Julian Lebitsch, Nina Pertiller, Eva Portenkirchner, Theresa Resienhofer, Jomo Ruderer, Jana Rieth, Vera Schabbon and Nadja Schaupp are exhibited.

The projects were developed as part of two Master Studios in the Institute of Architectural Theory, History of Art and Culture Studies.
