“Humming Room”: An Architectural Sound Art Project

As part of the Graz Cultural Year 2020, the architect Milena Stavrić (Institute for Architecture and Media), together with the artist Elisabeth Harnik and the acoustician Jamilla Balint, created the sound art installation "Humming Room."

The walk-in structure developed by Milena Stavrić consists of six movable, honeycomb-shaped wall elements, upon which an acoustic humming of honeybees is played. Depending on the configuration of the walls, the dynamic installation changes the listening experience and acts as a bridge between real architecture and virtual auditory impulses. At the same time, the installation is intended to make the connection between humans and honeybees sensually perceptible to visitors. In the final phase of the project, the honeycomb structure is being transformed into a permanent insect hotel. The installation was open until October 31, 2020 on the area in front of the Museum of Perception at Friedrichgasse 41 in Graz.
