Open Postdoc Position in the area of "Dependable Wireless Embedded Systems”

The research group on Intelligent & Networked Embedded Systems at the Institute of Technical Informatics of Graz University of Technology (Austria) is looking for a highly qualified Postdoc (university assistant with doctorate) to reinforce its research and teaching activities.

Context and scope. The Intelligent & Networked Embedded Systems group focuses on the latest advances in wireless networking, localization, collaborative awareness, and machine learning, towards the development of dependable and sustainable embedded/IoT systems. Exemplary research topics investigated within the group include, but are not limited to:

  • Dependable wireless communication despite harsh environmental conditions;
  • Robust and scalable ultra-wideband localization;
  • Testbeds and tools to benchmark existing wireless and IoT solutions;
  • Cross-technology communication, coordination, and synchronization;
  • Low-latency communication in the mesh-cloud continuum;
  • Battery-free and energy-harvesting systems;
  • Highly-performant and fault-tolerant wireless mesh networks;
  • Secure, self-healing, and adaptive IoT systems and cyber-physical systems.

The successful candidate will conduct highly competitive research in the aforementioned areas, and co-supervise PhD and MSc students.
The independent as well as supportive initiation, application and conduction of related research projects is also expected.

Candidate profile and requirements: Postdoc candidates must hold a PhD degree in computer science, information/computer/software engineering, information science, telematics, electrical engineering, or related studies. They are expected to show an established research record, including publications in top conferences and journals, in research fields related to the aforementioned topics.

Candidates should have:

  • Very good proficiency in written and spoken English, which is the language of the research group and of external collaborators (knowledge of German is not required, and Graz University of Technology offers German language courses for all its employees);
  • High motivation, self-initiative, working ethics, as well as strong passion and commitment to research;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and international team with both senior and junior people;
  • Solid C programming skills and experience with the programming of (networked) embedded systems and microcontrollers.

TU Graz aims to increase the number of female employees and therefore specifically invites qualified women to apply. Applicants at TU Graz are not discriminated in personnel selection procedures on the grounds of gender, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation.

Research team and working environment: The Postdoc position will reinforce and extend the research activities of the Low-power Embedded Networked Systems working group at the Institute of Technical Informatics . The group has a long-standing track record in the area of networked embedded systems, and is one of the leading European groups on low-power wireless networking, localization, and IoT research. The high quality of the research output is supported by several awards and by numerous conference papers at prestigious venues such as SenSys, IPSN, NDSS, ICDCS, INFOCOM, ICNP, EWSN, and RTSS. The group’s activities can be broadly characterized as "systems and application-driven research" at the intersection of wireless networking, embedded systems, and the Internet of Things, with the overarching goal of making the next-generation networked embedded systems more dependable and sustainable. The language of the research group is English. To get an idea of the research performed in the group, please browse the publications at http://www.carloalbertoboano.com.

Location: Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), with more than 16.000 students and 7 faculties, is a leading technical university which is ranked among the top 25 continental European universities according to the Shanghai subject ranking. Graz is one of a handful of European research hotspots on electronic-based and vehicular systems with numerous leading research centers and companies. Graz is the capital of the federal state of Styria, which is one of the European top research regions with about 5% of the gross regional product being invested in R&D. Graz is also the second largest city in Austria, it is a young and lively city with more than 50.000 students situated at the south-eastern foot of the Alps. It enjoys an almost Mediterranean climate & lifestyle, and its medieval old town (one of the largest and best-preserved in central Europe) is a UNESCO world heritage site. The city itself has a very high quality of life, and offers plentiful recreation opportunities.

Contractual details: The Postdoc position is remunerated according to the collective contract (Kollektivvertrag) for Austrian Universities. The salary amounts to 60.926,60€ per year before taxes for a full-time position (40 hours/week), which corresponds to approximately 40.000€ per year after taxes, health insurance, and social security deductions (see https://bruttonetto.arbeiterkammer.at/). The salary may increase in case of relevant prior work experience. Note that, compared to other major central-European cities, cost of housing and living in Graz is relatively low. The initial appointment for the Postdoc position will be of 18 months, and the position is available immediately.

Additional benef its: Basic funding to purchase material needed by the candidate to carry out research, to attend international research conferences for paper presentations, and potentially also for extended visits to international partner institutions will be provided. The university, which was awarded for being the most family-friendly Styrian company in 2018, also offers a mentoring program, extensive in-house training opportunities, including languages and soft skills, sports courses, and a welcome centre with many offers and support especially for international staff. Furthermore, the universities offers a collegial and friendly working atmosphere, flexible working schedule, subsidy for public transport, and company pension funds.
