Seminar "Supporting Structures in Design" | WS21/22

Earth Building | From the Earth to the Load-Bearing Structure

Earth or clay is the only building material that offers almost zero impact on the environment and creates an excellent indoor climate. In the winter semester 2021/2022, we will deal with the design of a modular load-bearing structure made of earth. The history and present of earth building as well as material properties, building techniques and the environmental balance of earth building are inseparable aspects for a successful and appropriate design. An excursion to Vorarlberg to the earthen building pioneer Martin Rauch and visiting his factory "Erden" for the prefabrication of rammed earth elements and a one-day workshop deepens the knowledge of earthen building in this course.

The aim is to be able to transfer the knowledge gained into the construction design and to develop a modular system for earth building. The modular system should be applicable for horizontal and vertical structural elements so that a complete building can be created.
