Creation of New Learning Areas in the Main Library

In the “Library of Your Dreams” survey, you expressed a desire for more and different quiet study areas and a lounge area.

What’s changing?
Quiet zones for focused work: In the low-ceiling areas on the 2nd and 3rd floors, we are removing bookshelves to create new individual workspaces. In the reading room on the 2nd floor, additional tables for up to four people will be added.

Inviting lounge zone: In the 3rd floor reading room, the textbook collection will be reduced to make space for a lounge area. At the same time, the entire 3rd floor will be transformed into a communication zone – ideal for collaborative work and discussion.

What happens to the books?
All books removed from the open-shelf area will remain available to you: They can be requested via LibrarySearch from the closed stacks or – in the case of theses previously located on the 2nd floor – additionally accessed and downloaded online.

Redesign timeline
The removal of shelves is expected to be completed by summer. The new individual workspaces and the lounge area will then be set up step by step. According to current planning, your wishes will be implemented by the start of the winter semester.
