Strohboid

Straw can be seen as a material of the future. It´s becoming the focal point of many architectural discussions, due to the advantages with respect to sustainability. Using local tried and tested materials, such as wood and bales of straw from the local farmer as well as clay from the building site, an ecological house of the future was built.

In addition, this building system made of straw is 100% free from synthetic material and noxious substances, regulates the climate, is suitable for passive houses, has a long life duration and is recyclable.

As lightweight construction, such as geometry of buildings in form of a saddle and the method of pre-stressed sandwich-construction made of wooden battens and straw, this saves half of the material in comparison to conventional methods.

Unlike standard buildings, the Stroiboid uses 90% less manufacturing energy, which is 17t CO² during the construction phase. Furthermore, 10t wood and straw are used for the building, in which additionally 20t CO² equivalent of 20t are saved.

The first prototype was built in Stübing. This has been the optimal building site, which stands symbolically for the symbiotic relationship of historical construction methods and modern architecture.
