This study proposes a hypothesis that lighting quality, especially the colour of light, can change our perception of space and materials and thus have an effect on the human psyche. Light is part of our environment. The space surrounding us is seen as a factor that can trigger stress. Health professionals state that preventing stress and discomfort is important for patients. Light and space are closely linked to our psyche. Interrelations between light and psyche are widely known, but often ignore aspects of the effect of space and surface materials. This study proposes that the lighting quality, especially the colour of light, can change the perception of space and materials and thus have an effect on the human psyche. Light is an intrinsic part of our environment. The space surrounding us is seen as a factor that can trigger stress. Health professionals state that preventing stress and discomfort is important for patients. In the context of health care, sensitive changes to the environment, e.g. to lighting, could have a positive impact on patients’ well-being.
