How can spatial planning influence high land consumption and increasing urban sprawl? Which planning instruments play a role in this? Which specifications favor which spatial and social developments? What options for action do municipalities and the province of Styria have, and what could sustainable development for a town and a region look like in concrete terms? We will explore these questions using the example of the municipality of St. Nikolai im Sausal in the South Styria Nature Park, based on scenarios: What happens if we continue as before? What if redensification only takes place in the town center? How can we work with vacancy mobilization and internal development in the Lamperstätten district? How should settlement activity around the Waldschacher ponds be handled at the municipal and regional level? And what strategy can St. Nikolai use to achieve the EU's net-zero new land use target and the Austrian soil strategy by 2050?
Based on site visits and various analyses, we will develop technical reports on development, open space, and land use planning, on the municipality's local development concept, and on the regional development program for southwestern Styria.
The in-depth study will take place on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
