The aim is to design a building using simple construction methods that minimizes its ecological footprint while remaining functional, economical, and atmospheric. The plan is to build a house for the neighborhood using a hybrid wood construction method. The focus is on designing with building systems in which wood, in combination with mass (clay, brick, stone, etc.), can create a robust, multi-story structure.
Thinking in terms of efficient or even modular construction methods plays just as important a role as simple building technology, which is made possible by the material properties (mass, ventilation, indoor climate, etc.).
The specific location for the community centre is a plot within the Triestersiedlung in Graz. The functional program is directly related to the neighborhood and is specified as ground floor with public use and above that with semi-public use.
An important part of the design process involves researching materials and construction methods, joints, detailing, and the creative expression of the assembled components. The Eco-Tool is used during the design process to continuously check how wood can be combined with mass building materials and achieve low emission values during construction.
