The research project “Trans|formator:in” sets the aim of accelerating processes of transformation in urban space, so as to advance sustainable mobility and quality of stay. Innovative methods are tested in pilot communities in order to create fit-for-the-future spaces that support active mobility and behavioral changes to achieve sustainable mobility. The redesign of Graz’s Neutorviertel as one of the seven pilot areas has been intensively monitored by the Institute of Urbanism. Together with the City of Graz, work is being done on the integration of participative approaches within the planning process. Widely varying participation formats and temporary redesign measures, such as on Kaiserfeldgasse, could already be collaboratively implemented and evaluated, and also established in the planning process in some cases. By carrying out such measures in a real-life environment, it is possible to obtain direct feedback from users and to test planned processes. Indeed, such redesign projects can actively promote satisfaction in, and codesign by, the resident population. What is more, the project has been developing evaluation methods for assessing the quality and effectiveness of participation, the promotion of active mobility, and its impact on spatial design. This aim is shared by the research project and the new Center for Active Mobility, a cooperation between Graz University of Technology and the University of Graz. In such practice-oriented research projects, innovative strategies for sustainable urban planning are developed and tested.
