The Center for Active Mobility was established in 2023 as a collaboration between the Institute of Urbanism at Graz University of Technology and the Institute of Environmental Systems Sciences at the University of Graz (Endowed Professorship for Active Mobility). Since its founding, the center has been working at the intersection of mobility, climate and environmental issues, spatial development, health, and economics in the context of research, teaching, and knowledge transfer.

One of the center’s major achievements is the study “Mobilitätsbezogenes Einkaufsverhalten in der Grazer Innenstadt” (Mobility‑Related Shopping Behavior in Graz’s City Center), conducted in cooperation with the Economic Chamber of Styria (WKO Steiermark) and the City of Graz. The results were presented in November 2025 at a press conference held by the project partners at Graz City Hall. The study included a survey of pedestrians at selected locations in the Graz city center. It examined shopping and consumption behavior, mobility both within the city and toward the city center, the quality of life in public space, and the competition posed by online retail and shopping malls. An online questionnaire was also distributed to business owners to gather their perspectives on these issues. The findings on the relationship between behavior related to means of transportation and shopping habits in Graz provide important insights for the city’s spatial and economic development and contribute to the long‑term improvement of quality of life in the downtown area.
