The building sector accounts for 40 percent of energy use and emissions in the European Union. To meet net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets by 2050, regulating whole-life carbon (WLC) emissions is essential. However, inconsistent life-cycle assessment methods, limited data, and poor national representation hinder progress. The project INDICATE LIFE aims to harmonize WLC methodologies, improve data quality, and develop national benchmarks aligned with the EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, and Luxembourg. Sustainable Construction at the Institute of Structural Design takes the lead in data processing, analysis, and benchmark establishment for Austria. Together with the Austrian Sustainable Building Council (ÖGNI), einszueins architektur, and ATP Sustain, the goal is to unite policymakers, industry leaders, and academia in order to tackle WLC challenges and transform the EU construction sector into a global leader in sustainable building practices.
