Summer School Hüttenwanderung

In September 2025, a five day hut-to-hut excursion organized by the Institute of Construction and Design Principles led students across the Hochschwab in Styria and the Schneeberg in Lower Austria. Curated for the first time by Wolfgang List and David Ortner, the route stretched nearly 100 kilometers and climbed more than 3,000 meters in elevation between three mountain huts. The starting point on the Hochschwab was the Voisthalerhütte, designed by Dietger Wissounig Architekten and awarded the GerambRose 2024. At Pogusch, the group visited the Glashaus Steirereck, designed by PPAG architects and winner of the GerambRose 2022. The third stage concluded at the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben at the foot of the Schneeberg, for which Baukult received the Timber Construction Award 2012. Talks by the hosts of the Voisthalerhütte and the hut warden of the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben—together with guided walk-throughs of kitchens, storage areas, and building-services rooms in the lower-ground levels of both huts—provided students with insights into the planning, operation, and maintenance of alpine structures. Moving from hut to hut also created room for conversations about the mountain landscapes encountered along the way and the architecture embedded within them.
