Architectural Models I: Hidden Potentials

In the fall of 2024, the Institute of Construction and Design Principles (KOEN) at Graz University of Technology, in collaboration with the University of Maribor, hosted a synergistic elective course called “Architectural Models I: Hidden Potentials,” focusing on adaptive reuse and urban hybrids. 28 students were encouraged to explore the hidden potentials of architectural references. Over six interactive sessions, they learned advanced model-building techniques, experimented with diverse materials, and studied sustainable spatial practices such as building within existing contexts and hybrid typologies. The participants engaged with both traditional craft-based methods and automated and experimental technologies. Using CNC milling machines, 3D printers, and cutting plotters, they explored creative model-making processes and then translated their project analyses into spatial models during three full-day practical workshops. The resulting models reveal transitions within buildings, such as those between old and new elements or between different functions. At the same time, they question the conventional use of materials and serve as effective tools for communicating architectural design concepts. 14 models were critically reviewed during a presentation in Graz with invited guests. In December 2024, the models were exhibited at Hiša Arhitekture in Maribor and later at “Graz Open Architecture” on the Alte Technik campus—exemplifying the strength of international academic collaboration in fostering innovative and impactful approaches to architecture.
