Wetting-Drying Test (DGGT Recommendation No. 27)

DGGT Recommendation 27 (by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geotechnik) describes a laboratory method to evaluate the slaking potential of rocks, i.e., their tendency to disintegrate when exposed to environmental conditions. The method combines three wetting–drying cycles and optional salt crystallization tests for very durable rocks to simulate natural weathering processes. Rock samples are repeatedly stressed, and their degree of breakdown (e.g., mass loss and fragmentation) is assessed. The results allow classification of rock durability and support decisions in geotechnical design and construction
