RaIL – Railway and Infrastructure Laboratory

At the Railway and Infrastructure Laboratory (RaIL), we establish the experimental foundations needed to better understand, test and further develop railway infrastructure systems.
Its distinguishing feature is that the test bench is not limited to a rigid clamping plate concept. Instead, complete superstructure systems can be subjected to:

  • Multi-axial hydraulic loading
  • Realistic load transfer conditions
  • Controlled variation of water saturation levels in both superstructure and substructure

This capability allows investigation of how moisture conditions influence stiffness, load redistribution, and long-term behaviour — a critical factor in infrastructure durability and climate resilience.
