Spaces of Mobility
The decarbonisation of our mobility systems is an urgent necessity in addressing the climate crisis. At the same time, the transformation of mobility spaces presents a unique opportunity to significantly enhance the quality of life in our cities. Reaching these goals calls for a reorganisation and functional shift in how we design and share mobility spaces—ensuring they are fairly distributed, attractively designed, and support active and collective modes of transport.
Car-dominated traffic zones must be reimagined as vibrant, user-friendly environments that promote alternative mobility and offer a high quality of stay. But how can we measure the quality of such spaces? And how can designers influence both their use and perception?
These questions are at the heart of the elective course Spaces of Mobility. Together, we will develop and discuss a catalogue of quality criteria for mobility spaces, and apply it in a hands-on analysis of selected streets in Graz.
In doing so, we aim to build a practical toolbox for designing future-ready mobility environments—spaces that rise to the ecological challenges of our time and contribute meaningfully to climate action.
