Toward a Regenerative District: Designing Around Resource Preservation
For centuries, everything that didn’t fit the image of bourgeois society—industry, poverty, waste—was pushed to the western bank of the Mur River. This historic division still shapes urban development today. Between Puchstraße and the riverbank, large-scale waste management facilities line up one after the other. Among them, the new Ressourcenpark holds a special position: it reflects a shift in how we perceive waste. Over 80 types of waste are collected, separated, and processed here for recycling—transforming what was once discarded into something new.
The surrounding area is also home to small businesses and workshops dedicated to repair, upcycling, and reuse. The foundation for a vibrant, resource-conscious, and environmentally engaged place is already in place.
In this course, we will build on these existing elements and define the next steps toward developing a regenerative district—one where ecological resilience, local economy, resource efficiency, and social sustainability are interwoven.
