E2 - Klagenfurt dem Bahnhof näher bringen

Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, is a popular holiday destination thanks to its location on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee. With the upcoming launch of the Koralmbahn high-speed rail line, Klagenfurt’s public transport connection to northern Austria—and beyond—is set to improve significantly. This opens up new potential for the city as a hub for business, tourism, and residential development. One thing is already clear: the central train station will become an even more prominent gateway to the city. This makes its connection to the city center all the more important.

In response, the City of Klagenfurt is currently developing a concept to redesign Bahnhofsstraße, the main axis linking the station with the city center. In Design Studio 2, we will build on this approach and explore the challenge of improving this connection at an urban scale.

Our aim will be to link the existing qualities of the district with attractive public spaces while making use of the potential for densification. We will not treat the area merely as a collection of buildings and functions, but instead integrate green spaces, infrastructure, and spatial qualities into a climate-conscious and socially just urban design.

The studio will begin with a joint strategy developed in full-group discussions. Following this, teams of three students will design concepts that align with this shared strategy and deliver strong architectural and urban design proposals for the area.
