Construction and Design

This course focused on the interface between design and construction. It evaluated both the constructive implementation of design aspects and the potential aesthetic value of materials and construction techniques. Selected excerpts from students' own design concepts provided the base. We discussed and analysed these details to identify their potential for further development. The excerpts' detail could have been part of a facade—but also an interior design sequence or even an exterior space could be elaborated. Which challenges had to be identified and addressed? Were adaptations to the design required, and did compromises need to be negotiated? We sharpened our professional understanding of joining techniques, materials and their properties, colours, as well as relevant regulations and standards, and examined how the desired solution could be achieved.
