AlCu4Ti alloys: Improved sample preparation for advanced electron microscopy investigations

The FELMI-ZFE is one of the leading institutions in the field of advanced electron microscopy of materials. One active field of research covers investigations of the micro- and nanostructure of alloys by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), from micrometers down to atomic resolution.
The master thesis is embedded in the “OPTIMATSTRUCT” project and shall focus on the characterization and improvement of sample preparation for aluminum alloys, namely AlCu4-type, for high resolution S/TEM investigations. Different techniques like electrolyte- and argon ion-polishing, precipitate extraction and focused ion beam milling will be involved and combined, and thereafter systematically compared in order to set the best procedure for these alloys. The candidate will experimentally work in our chemical and physical preparation laboratories and will get access to advanced instrumentation including the Austrian Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (ASTEM).
Students with good experimental skills and willing to work in a project with high industrial relevance are invited to apply.
