Advanced Functional 3D Nano-Probes for Atomic Force Microscopy

The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Direct-Write Fabrication of 3D Nano-Probes (CDL DEFINE) focuses on fabrication and application of 3D nanoprobes (see right) using an emerging 3D nano-printing technology. The CDL DEFINE is hosted at the Institute of Electron Microscopy and Nanoanalysis (FELMI) / Graz University of Technology in collaboration with the Graz Centre of Electron Microscopy (ZFE) and the industrial partners GETec Microscopy (Vienna) and Anton Paar GmbH (Graz).

The core technology in the CDL DEFINE is called Focused Electron Beam Induced Deposition (FEBID), which allows directwrite fabrication of even complex 3D nanoarchitectures (see left) on almost any material and surface morphology. We apply the technology for the fabrication, optimization and application in advanced atomic force microscopy (AFM). Recently, we have completed the proof-of-principle for a new 3D nano-probe concept, which enables electrical AFM modes including conductive-AFM (C-AFM), electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) and Kelvin force microscopy (KFM). To evaluate and optimize the performance of that 3D nano-probe concept with respect to the aforementioned AFM modes, we now look for support by a master student. The activities include 1) fabrication of 3D nano-probes, 2) application in classical AFM operation (height / phase / friction), 3) evaluation of C-AFM / EFM / KFM performance and 4) gradual nano-probe improvements to exploit the full potential of our 3D concept. Following that requirements, we are looking for candidates with background in i) Technical Physics, ii) Advanced Materials Sciences or iii) Technical Chemistry, although other disciplines are of course not excluded if the interest is evident. The ideal candidate should also feel safe with technical modification of our equipment.
