This year's excursion included a visit to the Vienna-Spittelau waste incineration plant.
Insights were given on how the plant was designed by famous Austrian artist and environmentalist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who wanted it to look in a friendly, inviting way. Starting with a short presentation about how the plant evolved over the last decades, prividing distant heating and cooling (!) as well as electricity to Vienna's housholds and public buildings. During a guided tour, practice was shown, from the collection point, where trucks continuously unload residual waste, via a mixing station and the furnace, where the waste is burnt at up to 800 °C, to the up-to-date offgas treatment (e.g., electrodynamic filters, SCR-denitrification system) and power plants.
The day was rounded off with a meal together at Schweizerhaus, famously located in Vienna's Prater.
