Graz is the capital of Styria and the second-largest city in Austria. It has a rich history, a well-preserved historic centre, and a diverse cultural scene. Landmark is the castle hill in the middle of the town with the remains of a fortress and the clock and bell tower.
The historic city centre is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. It consists of various architectural styles from the Middle Ages until the 18th century. Notable buildings are the Landhaus with its arcaded Renaissance inner courtyard, the Mausoleum of emperor Ferdinand II and the cathedral.
Graz has an active art and modern architecture scene. Since 2003 when Graz was cultural capital of Europe many iconic buildings like the modern art museum or the artificial island in the Mur have been realized.
